Our advice:

  • You have up to 15 months so be bold, try something new in this 'once in a lifetime' opportunity
  • 'Mix and Match' your activities. Perhaps spend 6 months earning and then some voluntary work and travel
  • Do some work that benefits others, not just yourself
  • Spend some time in the UK and some abroad

The general areas for a Gap Year include:

  1. Paid work at home

    Teach in a prep school; employment in the gap schemes offered by Accenture, Deutsche Bank, Year in Industry employers; a Gap Year commission in the army; work the summer in a youth hostel as an assistant warden, etc.

  2. Paid work abroad

    Gap Assistant in a school (Australia etc., Chile etc.) practice a language by working in Spain, S America, etc. Camp America or chalet work, etc.

  3. Study at home

    Art Foundation courses before university, cookery courses etc. ...and some also attend Tutorial Colleges to improve their A2 grades.

  4. Study abroad

    language courses, etc.

  5. Voluntary work at home

    Rank Organisation offer training and community work in the UK; there are a variety of short, residential opportunites in hospice work, conservation work, with National Trust etc.

    One of the most popular courses for studying abroad is Art History Abroad (website).

  6. Voluntary work abroad

    ... for a huge variety of teaching, conservation ideas. GAP Ltd and many other organisations, eg.: Project Trust, Schools Partnership Worldwide, Teaching and Projects Abroad, Frontier Conservation, Trekforce Expeditions, etc.

  7. Travelling and Trekking

    World/Gap Challenge, Brathay Exploration, etc.

  8. Sports

    qualify as an instructor in your chosen sport (sailing, canoeing, climbing, diving etc.), ski and snow-boarding instructor courses abroad - these might all help future earnings, both at uni. and in your gap year.
