Choosing a Subject > Statistics

Statistics come with all sorts of caveats. There is no such thing as a "best university": different universities have different strengths and, whereas one might consider Imperial as one of the best for Engineering in general, Bath is also well-known as a chart-topper in Mechanical Engineering. And it is important to differentiate between objective statistics and subjective perceptions. Add to this mix the fact that some departments are on the way up and others on the way down, and you can see that you should look further than bald figures. In the end, you should be looking at the content of the course and the quality of the teaching in particular, but to this add staff:student ratios, the percentage of 1sts and 2:1s gained, the research funding, the method of assessment amongst factors.
